Why are my impulses stronger when I'm tired?

My impulses feel stronger when I am tired because pausing before an automatic response becomes harder. Research suggests that restricted sleep can affect attention, working memory and some forms of inhibitory control, while my own tracking helps me see which urges become more difficult after poor sleep.

Why does being tired make discipline feel harder?

Being tired makes discipline feel harder for me because the pause between an impulse and an action becomes much smaller.

After less sleep or a long day, I feel more likely to fall back into familiar habits, including older difficult habits, without properly noticing the decision. I might reach for sugar, buy something from a vending machine, order takeaway, skip a workout or open an app and start doomscrolling. The easiest option feels even easier when I am drained.

My mood is often worse as well. I feel more irritable, less willing to tolerate discomfort and more interested in immediate relief. My working memory also feels weaker. I cannot hold as many ideas in my head, so the reason I wanted to cook, exercise or put my phone down can disappear behind whatever feels good now.

It is not that I suddenly have no values. It feels more like I have less space in which to remember and act on them.

What does research say about sleep and impulse control?

Research suggests that restricted sleep can make some automatic responses harder to stop, but it does not show that every tired person will make every kind of impulsive decision.

In a 2016 study, Kathryn Demos, Chantelle Hart, Lorie Sweet and colleagues compared four nights with six hours in bed against four nights with nine hours. The 34 adults made more inhibition errors after short sleep on a Go/No-Go task, which tests whether someone can stop an expected button response. However, the researchers did not find a difference in their risk-taking or delayed-reward tasks. That distinction matters to me. Sleep loss may make stopping an action harder without affecting every part of decision-making in exactly the same way.

Hans Van Dongen, Greg Maislin, Janet Mullington and David Dinges studied 48 adults assigned to four, six or eight hours in bed for 14 nights, alongside a total sleep-deprivation experiment. Cognitive performance worsened cumulatively in the four-hour and six-hour groups. Interestingly, people's subjective sleepiness did not fully mirror the continuing performance decline. I can therefore feel as if I am coping while still becoming less sharp.

My experience of weaker working memory also has some experimental support. Jose Arturo Santisteban, Thomas Brown, Marie-Claude Ouimet and Reut Gruber studied 93 adults after six nights with one hour less sleep than usual. They found an effect on a working-memory-capacity task, but not on their tests of response inhibition or decision-making. Again, the findings are mixed rather than absolute.

Food is another interesting example. In a small study of 23 adults after one night without sleep, Stephanie Greer, Andrea Goldstein and Matthew Walker found increased desire for higher-calorie foods. A night of total sleep deprivation is more extreme than my normal tired day, so I would not treat that result as proof that poor sleep caused my vending-machine choice. It does, however, make my own pattern feel worth observing.

Which impulses become strongest for me when I am tired?

The strongest tired-day impulses for me are usually food, scrolling, procrastination and avoiding effort.

After a long work shift, takeaway feels more attractive because it removes another decision. Sugar offers something immediate. Doomscrolling requires almost nothing from me. A workout, on the other hand, asks for effort at exactly the moment when effort feels most expensive.

I can even use content to avoid what I intended to do. I tell myself I will watch one video, then another starts. When I am well rested, I may notice that transition. When I am tired, the whole sequence can happen unconsciously.

That is why I do not want to reduce this to a character judgement. Saying I simply lacked discipline does not show me when the pattern happens or what makes it more likely.

Why do I track sleep beside my impulses?

Tracking sleep beside my impulses helps me test the pattern in my own life instead of relying on one vague impression.

In Selva, I can make sleep a daily habit. My personal target might be seven and a half hours or more, then the habit calendar shows how often I actually reach it. I may believe I sleep enough, but discover that I hit my target only 30 or 50 per cent of the time.

I can then look at my impulse record. Were sugar, takeaway and doomscrolling harder on the days after shorter sleep? Did I complete fewer habits? Did my resistance rate change? That does not prove sleep caused the result, but it gives me a pattern I can see and learn from.

What helps me on a tired day?

What helps me on a tired day is treating the pause itself as a useful result, even if I still give in afterwards.

When I notice an urge in Selva, the 45-second cooldown gives me time to breathe and become aware of what is happening. On a well-rested day, that pause may feel easier. On a tired day, it is like training on hard mode.

I may still order the takeaway or keep scrolling. But if I paused first, I turned an unconscious action into a conscious one. I can log the result instead of pretending it did not happen. Over time, my habits and impulses become a kind of scoreboard across my life, not to judge myself, but to show me where I am consistent and where I struggle.

Sleep feels paramount to me because it seems to affect so many other decisions. Tracking does not guarantee that I will sleep well or resist every urge. It simply helps me notice whether tiredness is part of the pattern, protect the small space before I act and keep showing up even on the difficult days.
